DECATUR, Ind. – An Indiana man says his family’s church barred him from singing at his grandmother’s funeral last week because he leads a “gay lifestyle.”
Connor Hakes, 23, asked to perform at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church after learning of his grandmother’s death on Nov. 21st.
Hakes says he and his family have been longtime members of the parish, so he was saddened when Father Bob J. Lengerich denied his request in a lengthy letter that has since been made public.
In the letter, Lengerich said he was concerned that Hakes was living a same-sex lifestyle and openly advocating for LGBT rights.
Many churches advertise their disapproval of homosexuality.
