The head of the Democratic National Committee, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, told Fox News on Friday Hillary Clinton is not under investigation by the FBI for storing over 2,000 classified emails on a private server.
“It’s important to underscore that Secretary Clinton isn’t even a target of this inquiry, investigation, whatever ‘I’ word you want to use,” Wasserman-Schultz said.
The DNC boss makes the comment at the 3:15 mark.
This contradicts what FBI boss James Comey said last week. He said the former secretary of state is part of a criminal investigation.
Clinton has tried to downplay the severity of the investigation by insisting the agency is conducting a “security inquiry,” not a criminal investigation.
“I don’t even know what that means, a ‘security inquiry.’ We do investigations here at the FBI,” Comey told Fox News’ Catherine Herridge.
It is expected Clinton will be interviewed in the coming weeks. Top aides, including Cheryl Mills and Huma Abedin, have already been questioned by the FBI as part of the criminal probe.
In February, Clinton said she is not worried about the scandal. She dismissed it as part of a Republican strategy to discredit her.
“Before it was emails, it was Benghazi,” Clinton said. “And the Republicans were stirring up so much controversy about that and I testified for 11 hours, answered the questions, and they basically said, ‘Yep, didn’t get her. That was all a political ploy.’”
She insisted she never received classified email on her private server.
“I never sent or received any classified material. They are retroactively classifying it. … I have absolutely no concerns about it whatsoever,” she said.
Clinton used the term “security review” when questioned by moderatorChuck Todd during a debate hosted by MSNBC.
“This is as security review that was requested, it is being carried out and it will be resolved,” she said.
